Course Description

n  Learning and memory are fundamental processes. The purpose of this course is to provide you with a broad overview of the basic processes of learning and memory including classical conditioning, instrumental conditioning and the encoding, storage and retrieval in memory. While we will explore the laws and principles of both, we will also focus on the application of these principles to everyday life.

 

Objectives

n  After successful competition of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the following:

o   You will understand the fundamental theories of learning and memory

o   You will have an understanding of the fundamentals of research methods in learning and memory

o   You will be able to communicate clearly and concisely about learning and memory concepts using various styles and techniques

o   You will understand the complexity of the joint biological and environmental contributions to learning and memory

n  Sharing academic materials knowing they will be used inappropriately, 

n  Accessing another person’s work without permission, 

n  Providing false or incomplete information on an academic document,

n  Obtaining and using texts or other materials intended for instructor use only.

 Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to: 

n  The presentation of another’s published or unpublished work as one’s own, 

n  Taking words or ideas of another and either copying them or paraphrasing them without proper citation of the source, 

n  Using charts, graphs, statistics or tables without proper citation.

Detected cheating or plagiarism will result in consequences that may, at the professor’s discretion, include course failure. Withdrawal Policy 

n  The last day to drop this course is April 13th. You will need to contact the registrar and get written documentation of your official withdrawal. Additionally, according to UIU policy, a student will be administratively withdrawn from this class if they miss five consecutive class periods before this date.

Note: While class attendance will not be calculated into the above grades, excessive absences will negatively affect your grade. Specifically, more than eight absences will result in a decrease of a full letter grade (for example from D to F).

 

Tests:

n  All tests will be part multiple choice, true/false and short answer format. There will be no make-ups for these exams - unless, there is an emergency and I am informed within a reasonably timeframe.

 

Reading Assignments:

n  The majority of the readings will come from the textbook. Additional readings will be assigned as well.

 


Research Paper:

n  Students will be required to write a 9-10 page paper (maximum 10 pages) during this semester. The body of the paper is 6-7 pages (title page, abstract, and references will make up the rest).

n  Due date: Apr 13th

Study Group Assignments

n  Throughout the term there will be five in-class study group sessions (approximately 20 minutes each session).

n  These will be reaction/reflection type assignments relating to a specific theorist/theory we have discussed in class.

n  One page summary (maximum) will be submitted for a grade.

n  Cumulative peer review will be taken into consideration.

 

Use of Electronic Devices

n  Use of cell phones and similar devices are not allowed during class; exceptions may be made upon request.

n  Texting is PROHIBITED!

n  I will post all PowerPoint presentations as well as other materials on this website. Laptops, etc. can be used to follow along or type in notes related to this website only. Going to other websites during class is not allowed.

 

Email Communication:

n  Students and faculty are required to use their official UIU issued email account – doej12@peacocks.uiu.edu or doej@faculty.uiu.edu or doej@uiu.edu.

n  I check my emails several times each day, including weekends. This is by far the best mode of correspondence. Expect a reply back from me within hours, if not minutes.

 

Academic Accommodations

n  It is the policy of Upper Iowa University to ensure equal access to educational and co-curricular activities to students with disabilities as mandated by the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Class Cancellation:

n  Concerning official university cancellations, the UIU website should be utilized to confirm these class cancellations. If I need to cancel class for any reason, students will be notified via email.

 

Submitting Work:

n  All written assignments must be submitted as directed in Microsoft Word format, either as a .doc or .docx file.   

n  Hard-copy submission of paper is required in class on day paper is due. However, on certain occasions I will allow for an electronic submission. Two rules must be followed concerning electronic submissions: (1) file submitted is from a Word document; (2) your submission is not official unless I have sent a confirmation return email of its receipt.

n  If a hard-copy of your paper is left in my mailbox or office (and thus has not been handed to me in person) you must also send me an email informing me of this and your submission is not official unless I have sent a confirmation return email of its receipt.
